Paper Work




This is the "Ross Board" which is used to hold the paper work for the WRS Crews.
The "Switch List" (top center) is the list of cars to be set out and pick up at each industry. Each town and its industries, which is being serviced by this train, are listed on this form.
The "Car List" (bottom left) is a list of cars to be deliveried to each town that the train services or this trip. This list allows the train crew to review the cars they need before leaving the yard.
The "Train Orders" (bottom right) is the instructions for the train crew for the train they are operating.

A switch list! Now that would be pretty radical on the Carleton Railway.

Less paper to handle, aka no 52 card pick up when they drop the paper work. But it requires more of my time to arrange the switch list. Maybe some day I will start using a computer program like Scott uses to generate the Switch List.

How long does it take you to prepare the switch lists? It looks like a wonderful system for the train crew, but I worry about the workload for the layout owner! Also, what happens when a car isn't set out or picked up as instructed? How do you correct "operator error"?

My Switch List is printed on a computer and not generated by one.

I have a table in Quatto that I fill in and then print as seen in the photo.

A few months ago I divided all the car spots (60 plus)on the layout into two groups. The first group is serviced on Day One and the second on Day Two. It takes me about three hours to set up and print every thing up.

First I take the last set of Switch List on the computer and move the Setouts to the Pick Up list. Then with this printout, I go the layout and check to make sure the cars are at the correct locations. Then I take the switch list and go into the yard and select with cars I want to delivier to each industry. Then back to the computer to fill in the blanks on the forms for both operating sessions. I run two session on a normal night because of the small size of my layout.
When I get the laptop setup in the basement it will reduce the work. One of the things I like about my system, a car does not always go back to the same industry time after time.

I was hoping to get to the point of having four sets of cars, so I could just cycle between these four sets of paperwork. But my staging yard is not finished yet and I am a few cars short in my fleet.
